Dealing with Anxiety in Children: Help Your Child with These 6 Tips!

Does your child have anxiety or panic disorders? Are you terrified that these attacks can make him or her physically ill? If untreated, an anxiety disorder can lead to problems such as muscle pains, cramps, rashes, hives, high heart rate, etc. While anxiety attacks don’t kill, they can still cause physical pain and discomfort if left untreated.

You can breathe a sigh of relief.

It IS possible for parents to help their children with this disorder. Dealing with anxiety in children usually requires therapy and medication. If you don’t want to take any drastic measures right now, you can learn how to help your child with alternative methods.

First, you must understand the different types of an anxiety disorder:

• Social anxiety

• Separation anxiety

• Post-traumatic stress disorder

• Specific fears (arachnophobia, fear of dogs, fear of a loved one dying, etc.)

• Avoidant disorder

• Overanxious disorder (ongoing anxiety that is not linked to a specific situation)

• Generalized anxiety disorder

• Panic disorder

Some of these have specific triggers or causes, and some don’t. A child suffering with a panic disorder, for instance, will have random anxiety attacks for no apparent reason. Sometimes they even have attacks in their sleep!

Here are some tips on dealing with anxiety in children.

1. Help them to build confidence so that they are able to face challenges in the future. Children who suffer with anxiety usually don’t have self-confidence. They are afraid to face the outside world. They would rather avoid certain situations and people than try to deal with them, simply because they’re not confident enough to try. Give your child some self-esteem boosters and offer encouragement every day.

2. Instead of telling them to “get over” their fears, sit down and have a talk with them. Never forget that anxiety is a real medical condition, so even if it seems like they are afraid of the silliest things, they are afraid nonetheless. Try to be understanding. Tell them that you have faith in them.

3. Encourage them to be brave. Help them to face their fears through gradual exposure. If your child is afraid of elevators, then slowly expose them to elevators. Instead of forcing them to ride one, take them to stand outside of an elevator for a few minutes every day. After a while, have them to ride on one just up or down one floor, then move on to two floors, and so on.

4. Keep them away from caffeine. Even adults with anxiety problems have trouble with caffeine. It causes the heart rate to increase, which can trigger anxiety. Make sure they drink tons of water to stay hydrated. Also, feed them plenty of Omega-3 rich foods. Omega-3 is a beneficial nutrient for those suffering with a panic disorder.

5. There are plenty of herbal remedies that can help children with anxiety. Just be careful with the dosages when giving herbal supplements to children. You could also give your child herbal tea every night before bedtime to ensure that they get enough sleep. Some herbs known to have sedative properties include valerian, chamomile, St. John’s Wort, and passion flower.

6. Try “play therapy” with your child. Find out what he/she is afraid of and then try to create an imaginary scenario where he/she has to deal with that fear. According to research, this type of session works because it gives the child a chance to manipulate the world on a smaller scale. They can practice facing their fears so that when the time comes for them to actually face their fears, they will experience less anxiety. They will be prepared.

Keep in mind that some of these techniques may work for your child and some may not. Some children experience generalized anxiety without any cause. They are simply nervous and anxious. For these children, diet modifications and natural sedatives are ideal. They should also be encouraged to exercise so that they can work off the nervous energy in a healthy way.
