4 Health Perks of a Pet
Hey everyone,
I’ve been hanging out with my puppy and I figured I could write about the health benefits of having a pet. I never used to have pets when I was younger… but now I realize how much my dog helps me cope with my anxiety.
Anyways… I did some research and found out some cool ways that pets help a person health! (I also wanted to post some pics of Taxi… Yup I named my dog Taxi!)
What are the major health benefits of having a pet?
They help keep you fit.
A recent study from St. Georges University has proven that kids and adults with dogs take an extra 360 steps in a day… and they exercise for 11 minutes more than people without dogs. All the extra exercise will help to relieve stress and anxiety.
They keep people calm.
Cuddling up with a pet helps people relax and de-stress. When a person pets an animal their heart rate slows down, which helps to make a person feel calm. Research done at the State University of New York found that people with pets have lower blood pressure when responding to stress than people without pets.
They help you cope with life.
Having a pet can help a person get through life’s tougher times. Pets always provide unconditional love and companionship while encouraging laughter and playfulness. Pets also help people take their mind off of panic and anxiety… It’s always a little harder to be depressed/anxious around your favorite pet!
Pets boost your immune system.
Dogs give your immune system a boost. A study done at Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital found that kids who live with dogs are 50 percent less likely to develop allergies when they grow up. Researchers believe that a compound called endotoxin boosts the immune system. This compound is found in the mouths of both cats and dogs and people are exposed to them through petting, play, and wrestling.
